Since 2011 with the exhibition “Raum-Selbst” (Space-Myself) in Brno, Czech Republic, Daniela Ehemann is exploring the theme “An architect makes space of identity/Heroes”. The Artist created a modell of the building, destroid it (by letting it fall down) and recreated a bigger, disfunctual fragment. Caught in the moment of the movement the installation seems to levitate. The viewer is invited to get involved physically as well as mentally in the uncertainty of the object and to read inbetween the “lines”.

Seit 2011, mit der Ausstellung “Raum-Selbst” in Brünn, Tschechien, setzt sich Daniela Ehemann mit dem Bau von Mies van der Rohe (Haus Tugenhat) bereits auseinander. Diese Arbeit bildet den Ursprung der künstlerischen Auseindersetzung mit dem Projekt: “An architect makes space of identity/Heroes”. Die Künstlerin baute die Villa als Modell nach, um dieses dann, durch den “freien Fall”, wieder zu zerstören. Als ein statisches Ideal fallen gelassen, “zerstört” und als überdimensioniertes, disfunktionales Fragment wiederaufgebaut, strebt dieses dynamisch und zugleich schwebend in den Raum. Festgehalten im Moment der Bewegung, kennzeichnen die neuralgischen Punkte in der Arbeit einen zeitlich-prozesshaften Zustand, der neue Räume und Wahrnehmungen ermöglicht. Als begehender Betrachter wird man eingeladen sich auf die spannungsvolle Unsicherheit dessen einzulassen, was zwischen den “Zeilen” geschieht.

“Landscapes and buildings haunted by their layered histories are the protagonists in British artist Zarina Bhimji’s photographs and large-scale film installations. India and East Africa are the repeat locations for her poetic foray into the archaeology of place… This first major survey exhibition traces 25 years of Bhimji’s work. It opens with the premiere of her long-awaited film, YellowPatch (2011), inspired by trade and migration across the Indian Ocean. Desolate yet beautiful close-up images of abandoned Haveli palaces and colonial offices in Mumbai harbour give way to atmospheric renditions of the desert and the sea, all accompanied by an evocative soundtrack. Yellow Patchcomplements the renowned film Out of Blue (2002), an arresting visual journey across Uganda, its elegiac terrain disturbed by the sound of fire, birds and human voices.”

“An architect makes space of identity“ / ”Heroes“

Based on the already existing artwork „Standing at the Still point of the turning world (Villa Tugendhat)“ there will be an ongoing series, which will terminate in the exhibitions in Chicago and Berlin. Examining the local heroes of architecture of both cities, especially regarding to the German architect Mies van der Rohe a rediscovery, confrontation as well as a discussion about concepts of functionality in modernism wants to be encouraged. In the installation the building ‘Villa Tugendhat’ was remodelled and dropped on purpose. From this captured moment, the freeze of the drop, Daniela wants to pick up the idea of visualized timelessness to enable an undefined point of view.

wandertone will follow the progress with the beginning of each month until July 2012 where the artist will exhibit her project in Chicago.

Weiterführendes Projekt/Ausstellungsserie

“An architect makes space of identity“ / ”Heroes“

Angelehnt an die bereits entwickelte Arbeit„Standing at the Still point of the turning world (Villa Tugendhat)“ ist eine weiterführende Ausstellungsserie geplant. Die nächsten Stationen bilden Chicago und Berlin.

Das Hauptanliegen dieser Serie ist es sich mit den lokalen „Helden“ der Architektur auseinander zu setzten, speziell mit den Arbeiten des deutschen Architekten Mies van der Rohe.

Geplant ist eine Neuentdeckung, aber auch Konfrontation und Diskussion über die heutige Positionierung der funktionalistischen Ideale der Moderne in Chicago und Berlin. Bezugnehmend auf die Erfahrungen des ersten Teils der Serie, „Standing at …“ in der das statische Ideal der Moderne die Villa Tugendhat den Ausgangspunkt bildet interessiert mich vor allem der Moment des “Falls” – die eingefrorene Bewegung, die jedoch jederzeit veränderbar eine scheinbare Zeitlosigkeit veranschaulicht und einen neuen undefinierten Freiraum und somit neue Sichtweisen ermöglicht.

wandertone wird die Entwicklung und Auseinandersetzung mit diesem Projekt monatlich begleiten. Aktuell in Berlin gestartet, mündet deren erster Abschluss im Juli 2012 in eine Ausstellung in Chicago. Zu Beginn jedes Monats wird ein weiterer Arbeitsprozess präsentiert.

Within three-dimensional illustrations she creates walkable spaces, which loosens and expand the horizon of the viewers perception through juxtaposing drawings against objects.

“[As] first steps in this body of work […] I intersected apartments of missing people. The main interest dealt with the question and search of personal identity, expected to be directly or indirectly mirrored through the left over’s of the former habitants.
My main focus started with the analysis and the reflection of the “found”, like a filled draw or a used cup on the kitchen table to find out who they where and why they left. Finally I had to deal with the acknowledgement that the imaginations of identity are always followed by truth and error, as well as reality and fiction. […]
By challenging standards of ideology, like the belief of a safe coordinating system we seem to live in (“Walking on the edge of the visible”) or by undermining the authority of a functionalistic masterpiece in “Standing at the still point of the turning world” (Villa Tugendhat, Brno, Czech Republic by Mies van der Rohe) I also started challenging the standards of the society and community.”

Project ‘raum:selbst’

Durch ihre drei-dimensionalen Illustrationen schafft sie begebare Räume die ihre Kunst unmittelbar erlebbar machen. Sie stellt Zeichnungen Objekten gegenüber; arbeitet mit Stahl, Schatten und Kohle und verwischt so die Grenzen zwischen Rauminstallation und Zeichnung.

„In den jüngsten Arbeiten „Walking on the edge of the visible“, 2010 und „Standing at the still point of the turning world“, 2011 wurden sowohl ideologische Standards, wie der Glaube an ein sicheres gesellschaftliches Koordinatensystem hinterfragt, als auch die Autorität eines funktionalistischen Meisterwerkes der Moderne (Villa Tugendhat, Mies van der Rohe, Brünn, Tschechien) stellvertretend für ein identitätsstiftendes System der Architekturgeschichte beleuchtet.“

“One of the main interests of our days is the question of identity. How do we shape our own reality today to create our identity? What role takes the space that surrounds us within this? What is important in defining our inner space: the familiar bus station, the own apartment, the city as an architectural space?”

These are just some of the questions Daniela is asking in her art.

“Regarding the experiences I faced as a kid, the constant relocation through traveling with my family, I started questioning the relation of space and identity. My artistic work translates this question in different ways.”

„Die thematische Auseinandersetzung mit der immer wiederkehrenden Frage nach Identität.Wie gestalten wir unsere heutige Realität um unsere Identität zu definieren?
Welche Rolle nimmt der uns umgebende Raum in diesem Diskurs ein?
Was ist entscheidend für die Definition des eigenen inneren Raumes: die vertraute Busstation, das eigene Apartment, die Stadt als architektonischer Raum?“

Das sind nur einige der Fragen, die sich Daniela in ihrem Werk stellt.

„Zusammenhängend mit den Erfahrungen, sich als Kind mit einem permanentem Wechsel des Standortes, Lebensumfeldes auseinander zusetzten, begann ich das Verhältnis von Raum und Identität zu hinterfragen. Meine künstlerische Arbeit übersetzt diese Frage auf verschiedenen Wegen.“

“For me, appreciating film over digital is not a protest against the digital era but I could say that it´s partly a protest against some symptoms caused by digitalized world. It´s the process that´s really important to me and the physicality of the pictures, it´s not just data on your computer it´s something “real”. I´ve spent thousands of € to kodak but I´m happy with the thought that there´s a huge metal box full of memories I can touch if I feel like it.”

“Anja Schaffner & Riitta Ikonen assume the characters Leaf and Bird in this picture series attempting to reflect on the artist’s sentimental yearning to ‘get back to nature’. The photographer Anja Schaffner constructs an image in which Riitta Ikonen’s self-made characters appear in a rural seasonal landscape. As solitary figures, Bird and Leaf are misplaced in a surreal scene and we feel for them: nature is something impermanent and ‘getting back’ is impossible.”

I usually find it hard to speak about myself. I always stumble in the paradoxes of «who am I ?».

In terms of factual information, I surely appear to be the most well informed person about my own self. But as soon as I need to communicate about who I am, I tend to do it through filters, selecting what I want to communicate, and how I wish to do it, in accordance with my interests and sensitivity.

So what can be the objective value of the way that I picture my family and my life ? How much does it concretely relates to reality or not ?

Martin Wheelers Werk ist eine von Beginn an faszinierende visuelle Entdeckung, durch und durch konsequent in ihrer Entwicklung wie im Ergebnis. Mittels verschiedenster Techniken von Malerei bis Steinarbeiten kostet er seine Ideen bis zum Letzten und strapaziert Konventionen, die den Betrachter innehalten lässt um genauer hinschauen zu können.

Seine Skizzenbücher sind randgefüllt mit gehaltvollen Beobachtungen in Wort und Bild, die bereits in sich wie Kunstwerke erscheinen und einen sehr genauen Einblick in seinen Schaffensprozess ermöglichen.

Mit gewagt plakativer Verwendung von großen Schwarzflächen führt er den Betrachter in eine Tiefe, in einen intensiv erlebbaren Raum.

Martin selbst beschreibt seine Arbeit als Antwort auf die empirische Beziehung zwischen realem Objekt und visueller Realisation vom wahrgenommenen Raum, die er auch selbst im Entstehungsprozess spüren konnte. Er breche mit konventionellen Gestaltungslehren. Eine räumliche Ästhetik, die Deplatzierung und Ungleichgewicht zwischen den räumlichen Bereichen verkörpert, sei das Ergebnis dieser Anstrengungen.

Martin hat kürzlich sein Studium zum Illustrator beendet und widmet sich momentan einem Master in Bildender Kunst.
